The majestic sea has always been a contradictory blend of awe and apprehension. It is a calm beauty, clear, azure blue water sparkling as it reflects the sun’s rays. Underneath lies a wealth of knowledge which even after decades and centuries, has yet to be discovered fully. But the sea has also been known to run amuck, consuming lives and destroying whatever that lays in its path.
Kaoru closed his eyes as a gentle sea breeze blew, weaving through his hair in soft caresses. The salty scent of the sea was refreshing, making his senses tingled. His worries escaped him for the time being as he slipped into a brief respite separated from reality.
“Well, well…if it isn’t BL Academy’s loveliest rose,” a low voice drawled.
His ears buzzed at the sound of that all-too familiar voice and his eyes snapped open. Glancing to his right, he saw the infuriating vice-president of the Student Council watching him almost lazily, a smirk teasing the corners of his lips. “If you have no urgent business with me, please take your leave. I wish to be alone right now.”
Nakajima Hideaki crossed an arm across his body while the other hand reached up to stroke his chin. “Tsk tsk,” he chided with a thoughtful look in his eyes, “And the thorniest too. It is no wonder you are difficult to pick.”
Kaoru refused to take the bait, frowning deeply. Without saying a word, he turned his attention back to the sea, hoping that the other would somehow go away. But he should have known Nakajima was not your typical sensitive guy. Niwa would have apologized for teasing him, and maybe perhaps asked what was wrong. Omi would leave him alone, allowing him space. But not Nakajima.
“You look terribly lonely, Saionji,” the blue-haired teen drawled and Kaoru heard his steps approaching. He struggled to keep his composure as the vice-president came up beside him, leaning against the railing, too close for comfort.
“Have you got nothing to do? Surely the virus Omi sent would require quite a bit of your attention?”
Nakajima chuckled and Kaoru could faintly feel the tremors. “Your dog is still years away before he could match up to my level. I finished handling the situation a while ago, which was why I decided to get a breather. But the damage done was quite extensive. It was a lucky thing I had a backup copy.”
Kaoru glanced askance. “The two of you are just like squabbling school kids. It is silly.”
“Silly as it may be, I have to admit the challenges your dog had thrown upon my security system so far have been a great form of entertainment,” the vice-president said with a knowing smile. His cool blue eyes, much like the sea, sparkled with sinister mirth. Kaoru regretted facing the teen, for now it seemed he was trapped by those eyes, unable to tear his gaze away.
“But much as I enjoyed the entertainment,” he continued, “I have yet to really get back at him.”
Kaoru narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “But didn’t you launch counter-attacks upon his system too?”
Nakajima laughed, a throaty resonance that made the hairs on Kaoru’s arms stand, shivers running down his spine, his heart racing slightly. It was probably the proximity that unnerved him, making him feel the way he did.
“Those weren’t enough,” the bespectacled teen whispered and before he knew it, Kaoru felt himself being grabbed by the shoulders and pushed against a nearby tree.
“Nakajima!” Kaoru cried out as his back hit the tree trunk. But surprisingly, he hardly felt pain; Nakajima had somehow managed to be rather gentle despite the fact that he was anything but. However, pain was the last of his concern; trapped between a tree and a smirking Nakajima was. “What are you doing?” he demanded.
“This would really be getting back at him, don’t you think so, Saionji?”
“You’re crazy!” Kaoru hissed, struggling to free his hands from bespectacled teen’s grip. Nakajima laughed instead, and Kaoru felt the other’s warm, minty breath upon his skin. They were so close that if either of them was to lean forward, their lips would touch.
The thought alarmed him.
“You really are as delicate as you look to be,” Nakajima commented, almost analyzing. “It’s no wonder you need a Knight to protect you, especially from big, bad wolves like me. But as I recall, I once saved you from those bunch of tae-kwon-do goons.”
Kaoru narrowed his eyes. “I don’t recall,” he lied, convincingly as he could.
The vice-president’s trademark maddening smirk grew wider. He leaned in slightly, and Kaoru gasped in surprise. Their lips were only inches apart now. “You really are beautiful, Saionji. That dog is very lucky indeed.”
He wanted to shout at the smiling devil to move away. He was also tempted to raise his knee and inflict some serious damage to the bespectacled teen. But staring at Nakajima this up-close chased away his intents. Despite his insufferable attitude, Nakajima was a striking good looker. His eyes were perhaps his best asset; intelligent deep blue with misleading calmness, and if one is not careful, it is easy to get drown in them. Perhaps it was a blessing that those glasses were there to undermine its impression, unless of course, one has the misfortune to stand so close before him.
Dangerous… just as the sea.
“Stop calling him a dog,” Kaoru finally said, looking away as he did so.
“Does it bother you that much? What is Omi to you?”
The comment startled him, and he unwittingly locked eyes once again with Nakajima. “What are you talking about? Omi and I are childhood friends!”
“Really?” Nakajima suddenly whispered at his ear, and Kaoru shuddered at the unexpected intimacy. “Are you both really just friends? Hmm, perhaps Omi feels just that, but not you, am I right?”
A sharp pang stabbed through his heart, the world suddenly coming to a standstill as an unspeakable pain coursed through him. And not knowing how, he suddenly had the strength to pull his hand free from Nakajima’s grip and send it flying across the latter’s face.
Silence ensued. Neither of them moved; they stood staring mutely at each other. Kaoru felt his face burning hot as he slipped back into reality, but Nakajima was expressionless. Only the faint red streaks of his fingers colored the vice-president’s face.
“Hmph, so you do feel strongly about this,” Nakajima finally spoke, breaking the silence.
No, Omi is just a friend! Omi and I… we are close friends. We are close friends. We may have changed a lot from our childhood days, but we are friends still! We are just friends…
“… we are just friends…”
He heard Nakajima sighed and realized he had just spoken out loud. Kaoru panicked, eyes searching the other’s face, but Nakajima looked as if he was not the least interested. “I will head back to the Student Council. Who knows what that dog has up his sleeves this time.”
The vice-president stepped back, eyes regarding Kaoru carefully. “Head back to the Treasury and get some rest. But tell your dog to be on his guard all the time. I’ll be waiting to launch a surprise attack that will hurt him badly if he’s still not careful about protecting what he has taken for granted.” He fingered his reddened cheek. “And this…” His voice trailed, lips curving into a smile, but which sent shivers down Kaoru’s back.
What? But Kaoru had not chance to ask, for Nakajima had already taken his leave as soon as he finished speaking.
Just like the waves of the majestic sea, Nakajima Hideaki came teasing as he pleased, then forcefully engulfed, before taking his leave swiftly.
